Teachers' TV

Sue's Pick of the Bunch - For an incredibly powerful message about bullying, and about the power of a person to change minds and win hearts, watchInspirations - The Scary Guy.

A few thoughts about TTV:

I’ve been doing filming for Teachers TV for a while now, and it’s given me a chance to work with many different teachers in a number of different schools. It’s also offered me a fascinating insight into how television is made. I hope my programmes also give you some new ideas to use in your classroom. I know that some teachers feel uncomfortable about using Teachers TV as a way of delivering CPD, and I can understand some of their concerns. Having watched quite a bit of the programming myself, I have found it especially useful to get an insight into what is going on in all kinds of different classrooms. Let’s face it, at least it shows the government taking an interest in the profession, and it’s an excellent way of raising the profile of teachers.

As with anything on the television, there is an element of unreality about Teachers TV. Put a couple of cameras and a handful of strangers into any classroom, and obviously the students are going to behave differently. (Although my latest project - Manage that Class - solves this problem by using concealed cameras, so you get a 'warts and all' view of what really goes on in a lesson.) Editing might make the programme the right length, but it can mean you miss out on some of the trickier or funnier moments that were captured live on film. I can understand the comments that some teachers make about how you never get to see really badly behaved students on TTV (let's face it - what head teacher or classroom teacher would let you in to see their 'Class from Hell'?) Hopefully, though, you will be able to find some useful and practical strategies in these programmes. I hope you enjoy watching me, the teachers and the kids in action.
